Still Have PTO Left? Here's How to Use Every Last Day Before December 31
The $2,500 Mistake
According to the US Travel Association, 55% of American workers don't use all their vacation days. The average worker forfeits 4.6 days per year. At median compensation, that's roughly $2,500 you're donating back to your employer.
It's October. If you have unused PTO, the clock is ticking. But the good news: Q4 has some of the best vacation windows of the entire year.
Your Remaining Days Playbook
You Have 2 Days Left
Best move: Thanksgiving extension
Take Wednesday November 25 and the Tuesday before (November 24):
- Tue Nov 24 → PTO
- Wed Nov 25 → PTO
- Thu Nov 26 → Thanksgiving
- Fri Nov 27 → Day after (most employers)
- Sat–Sun Nov 28–29 → Weekend
2 PTO days → 6 days off. Done.
You Have 3 Days Left
Best move: Christmas to New Year's
Take Monday December 29 through Wednesday December 31:
- Wed Dec 24 → Christmas Eve (many employers close)
- Thu Dec 25 → Christmas
- Fri–Sun Dec 26–28 → Weekend
- Mon Dec 29 → PTO
- Tue Dec 30 → PTO
- Wed Dec 31 → PTO
- Thu Jan 1 → New Year's Day
- Fri–Sun Jan 2–4 → Weekend
3 PTO days → 11 days off (Dec 24–Jan 4). Efficiency: 3.7x.
This is the single highest-efficiency window of the year. If you only have 3 days, use them here.
You Have 5 Days Left
Best move: Thanksgiving + Christmas
Split them: 2 days for Thanksgiving (see above), 3 days for Christmas-to-New-Year's.
5 PTO days → 17 days off across two separate breaks.
You Have 8+ Days Left
Best move: Full Q4 optimization
With 8 or more days, you can afford all of the above plus a mid-October or November escape:
- Columbus Day week (Oct 12): Take Tue–Fri off → 9 days (if your employer observes Columbus Day)
- Random November week: Early November is travel's best-kept secret. Flights and hotels are at yearly lows. Take a full Mon–Fri for 9 days, or stack it around Veterans Day (Nov 11, Wednesday) for a mid-week break.
The "Use It or Lose It" Trap
Many companies have use-or-lose policies -- unused PTO expires December 31. Some allow limited rollover (often 5 days max). Check your employee handbook for:
- Rollover cap: How many days carry over?
- Blackout dates: Some companies restrict PTO in late December for year-end close.
- Payout policy: A few companies pay out unused days, but this is increasingly rare.
If your company has a PTO use-it-or-lose-it policy with a December deadline, don't wait until December to use them. November is far less stressful and cheaper for travel.
Why You Should Plan Now, Not Later
Every week you wait in Q4, travel prices climb:
- October bookings for November travel: baseline pricing
- November bookings for December travel: +15–25%
- December bookings for same-month travel: +30–50%, limited availability
The difference between booking a Christmas trip in October versus December can be $300–$800 per person on flights alone.
Quick Destinations for a November Escape
November is off-peak almost everywhere that isn't a ski resort:
- Mexico City: Perfect weather (65–75°F), cheap flights, incredible food scene. 4-day trip is ideal.
- Sedona, AZ: Fall colors, hiking weather in the 60s, no summer crowds.
- Savannah, GA: Spanish moss, historic architecture, mild temps. A long weekend here costs less than a nice dinner in NYC.
- Puerto Rico: Warm, no passport needed, and November is shoulder season between hurricane and high seasons.
