Thanksgiving 2026: 3 PTO Days, 9 Days Off -- The Complete Strategy

Share:

Thanksgiving Is the Easiest PTO Hack of the Year

Thanksgiving always falls on a Thursday. Most employers give you Friday off too. That means every year, you start with a guaranteed 4-day weekend (Thu–Sun) for zero PTO.

The hack is what you do with the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before it.

The Math

Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26.

Date Day Status
Sat Nov 21 Saturday Weekend
Sun Nov 22 Sunday Weekend
Mon Nov 23 Monday PTO day 1
Tue Nov 24 Tuesday PTO day 2
Wed Nov 25 Wednesday PTO day 3
Thu Nov 26 Thursday Thanksgiving -- federal holiday
Fri Nov 27 Friday Day after Thanksgiving (most employers)
Sat Nov 28 Saturday Weekend
Sun Nov 29 Sunday Weekend

3 PTO days → 9 consecutive days off. That's a 3.0x return.

This is one of the highest-efficiency windows of the year, rivaled only by Christmas-to-New-Year's.

The "Short" Version

Don't have 3 days to spare? Take just Wednesday off:

  • 1 PTO day → 5 days off (Wed Nov 25 – Sun Nov 29). Efficiency: 5.0x.

That single Wednesday is the highest-value PTO day in November by a wide margin.

Why Thanksgiving Week Is Special for Travel

Flights are cheaper before Thanksgiving than during it. Most people fly Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning. If you leave on Saturday the 21st or Sunday the 22nd, you dodge the price surge entirely.

The same applies to return flights. Everyone flies back Sunday the 29th. Fly back Monday or Tuesday of the following week, and you'll save 20–40% on airfare.

International destinations are off-peak. While domestic travel is at its yearly peak, most international destinations are in their quiet season. Europe in late November has Christmas markets open, low hotel rates, and no summer crowds.

Where to Go With 9 Days

Destination cards for Thanksgiving travel: Mexico, Costa Rica, Europe with Christmas markets, and Hawaii

Warm escapes:

  • Mexico (Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido, Tulum): Peak weather, pre-holiday prices. The Day of the Dead crowds have cleared by mid-November.
  • Costa Rica: Dry season starts in November. 9 days is enough for both Pacific coast beaches and Arenal/Monteverde cloud forests.
  • Hawaii: November is the start of "winter" rates, but the weather is still warm (75–80°F). Whale season begins in late November on Maui.

Shoulder season in Europe:

  • Portugal (Lisbon, Porto): 60°F, uncrowded, and significantly cheaper than summer. Wine country is at its most atmospheric.
  • Spain (Seville, Barcelona): Still mild enough for outdoor dining. Museum lines are nonexistent.
  • Christmas markets (Germany, Austria, Czech Republic): Many markets open the last week of November. You'll catch the opening days before the December crowds arrive.

Domestic:

  • National parks: Fewer crowds, autumn foliage still visible in the Southeast and Southwest. Big Bend and Death Valley have perfect weather.
  • New York City: The Macy's parade, holiday window displays, and ice skating at Rockefeller Center. Classic for a reason.

When to Book

Booking timeline for Thanksgiving travel showing September as baseline best prices, climbing to +50% the week before

Thanksgiving travel follows predictable pricing patterns:

When you book Price premium vs. lowest
September Baseline -- best prices
October +5–10%
Early November +15–25%
Week before +30–50% (if available)

Book in September for Thanksgiving travel. Domestic flights especially -- routes like LAX→JFK or ORD→MIA sell out early.

Hotels are more flexible -- many offer free cancellation up to 48 hours before check-in, so book now and keep looking.

Stack It With Christmas

Here's the power move: use 3 PTO days for Thanksgiving (Nov 23–25) and 3 more for Christmas (Dec 29–31). That's 6 PTO days for 19 total days off across two separate vacations.

With 15 PTO days, you'd still have 9 remaining for the rest of the year -- more than enough for Memorial Day, July 4th, and a random Friday or two.
