Annual Leave Guides by Country: 2026 Edition
Not All Leave Is Created Equal
A worker in France gets 36 paid days off before they touch a single bridge strategy. An American gets 11 federal holidays and zero guaranteed PTO. Same planet, wildly different starting points.
These gaps come down to labor law, cultural priorities, and how each country balances productivity with rest. But regardless of where you sit on the spectrum, the math of holiday bridging works everywhere: use PTO on the days between public holidays and weekends, and your time off multiplies.
This guide covers eight countries. For each one, you'll get the 2026 public holiday count, the statutory leave minimum, and the best bridge windows of the year with their efficiency multipliers.
United Kingdom
Public holidays in 2026: 8 (England and Wales) Statutory minimum leave: 28 days (including bank holidays) for full-time workers
The UK's leave entitlement is among the strongest in Europe when you combine the 20-day statutory minimum with 8 bank holidays. The challenge is that bank holidays cluster -- three in spring, none between late August and Christmas.
Top bridge windows:
- Early May Bank Holiday (Mon May 4): Take Tue-Fri off = 4 PTO days, 9 days off. 2.3x.
- Spring Bank Holiday + Platinum combo (Mon May 25): Take Tue-Fri (May 26-29) off = 4 PTO days, 9 days off. 2.3x.
- Christmas/New Year (Fri Dec 25 - Fri Jan 1): With Dec 25 and 28 (substitute for Boxing Day Sat) as bank holidays, take Dec 29-31 off = 3 PTO days, 10 days off. 3.3x. The best window of the year.
Tip: Book your Christmas bridge in Q2. UK flight prices to European short-haul destinations rise 40-60% after October for December travel.
United States
Federal holidays in 2026: 11 Statutory minimum leave: 0 (no federal requirement; average private-sector benefit is 10-15 days)
America is the only advanced economy with no statutory paid leave. That makes every PTO day more valuable -- and bridging more important.
Top bridge windows:
- Thanksgiving (Thu Nov 26): Take Mon-Wed before = 3 PTO days, 9 days off. 3.0x.
- Christmas to New Year's (Thu Dec 25 - Thu Jan 1): Take Dec 29-31 = 3 PTO days, 10 days off. 3.3x. Highest efficiency window of the year.
- Independence Day (Sat Jul 4, observed Fri Jul 3): Take Mon-Thu (Jun 29 - Jul 2) = 4 PTO days, 9 days off. 2.3x.
Tip: If your employer offers floating holidays, save them for mid-week public holidays where a single day converts to a 4-day weekend.
Australia
Public holidays in 2026: 8 national + 1-3 state-specific Statutory minimum leave: 20 days (4 weeks) for full-time employees under the National Employment Standards
Australia's leave system is generous by global standards, and state holidays add extra opportunities. The calendar varies significantly between states -- always check your specific state.
Top bridge windows:
- ANZAC Day (Sat Apr 25, observed Mon Apr 27): Take Tue-Fri off = 4 PTO days, 9 days off. 2.3x.
- Queen's Birthday (Mon Jun 8, most states): Take Tue-Fri off = 4 PTO days, 9 days off. 2.3x.
- Christmas-New Year (Thu Dec 25 - Thu Jan 1): Take Dec 29-31 = 3 PTO days, 10 days off. 3.3x. Combine with Boxing Day (Fri Dec 26) for an even longer stretch.
Tip: Australia's financial year ends June 30. If your leave accrual resets then, plan your biggest bridge windows for H1 when your balance is freshest.
Germany
Public holidays in 2026: 9-13 (varies by state; Bavaria has the most) Statutory minimum leave: 20 days (based on 5-day work week); many collective agreements provide 25-30
Germany is a bridging powerhouse. The concept is so embedded in the culture that there's a dedicated word for it: Bruckentag (bridge day). Employers expect bridge requests, and many firms publish annual bridge-day calendars in January.
Top bridge windows:
- Ascension Day (Thu May 14): Take Fri May 15 off = 1 PTO day, 4 days off. 4.0x. The single best-efficiency day in the German 2026 calendar.
- Corpus Christi (Thu Jun 4, select states): Take Fri Jun 5 off = 1 PTO day, 4 days off. 4.0x.
- German Unity Day (Sat Oct 3): Unfortunate Saturday placement in 2026, but take Mon-Fri (Sep 28 - Oct 2) off around the preceding weekend = 4 PTO days, 9 days off. 2.3x.
Tip: File your Bruckentag requests in January. Popular bridge days -- especially the Friday after Ascension -- sell out in German offices within the first week of the year.
France
Public holidays in 2026: 11 Statutory minimum leave: 25 days (5 weeks) + RTT days in many sectors
France's combination of 25 statutory leave days, 11 public holidays, and widespread RTT (reduction of working time) agreements means many French workers get 36-40 paid days off annually. The bridge strategy here is about maximizing consecutive time off for longer trips, not scraping together enough days for a break.
Top bridge windows:
- Ascension (Thu May 14) + Whit Monday (Mon May 25): Take Fri May 15 and the week of May 18-22 = 6 PTO days, 16 days off. 2.7x. France's legendary pont de mai.
- Bastille Day (Tue Jul 14): Take Mon Jul 13 off = 1 PTO day, 4 days off. 4.0x.
- All Saints' Day (Sun Nov 1, observed Mon Nov 2): Take Tue-Fri = 4 PTO days, 9 days off. 2.3x.
Tip: The pont de l'Ascension is so popular that schools often schedule holidays around it. Book flights at least 8 weeks ahead for anything Mediterranean.
Canada
Federal holidays in 2026: 6 statutory (nationally) + provincial holidays Statutory minimum leave: 10 days (2 weeks) federally; most provinces mandate 10-15 days
Canada's holiday calendar is similar to the US but with key differences: Thanksgiving falls in October, and provincial holidays like Family Day (February) and Civic Holiday (August) create extra bridge options depending on your province.
Top bridge windows:
- Canada Day (Wed Jul 1): Take Thu-Fri off = 2 PTO days, 5 days off. 2.5x. Or take Mon-Tue before as well = 4 PTO days, 9 days off, 2.3x.
- Thanksgiving (Mon Oct 12): Already a 3-day weekend. Take Tue-Fri = 4 PTO days, 9 days off. 2.3x.
- Christmas-New Year (Fri Dec 25 - Thu Jan 1): Take Dec 29-31 = 3 PTO days, 10 days off. 3.3x.
Tip: If you're in Ontario or BC, stack Family Day (Mon Feb 16) with Presidents' Day cross-border deals -- US retailers discount heavily that weekend and online shopping ships to Canada.
Japan
Public holidays in 2026: 16 Statutory minimum leave: 10-20 days (scales with tenure; 10 days after 6 months, maxing at 20 after 6.5 years)
Japan has the most public holidays of any country on this list -- but also one of the lowest PTO utilization rates. Cultural pressure against taking leave remains strong, though the government's yukyu shoka (paid leave uptake) campaign is pushing usage above 60% for the first time.
Top bridge windows:
- Golden Week (Apr 29 - May 6): With Showa Day (Wed Apr 29), Constitution Day (Sun May 3, observed Mon May 4), Greenery Day (Tue May 5), and Children's Day (Wed May 6), take Thu Apr 30 and Mon May 1 = 2 PTO days, 8 days off. 4.0x. Japan's premier bridge window.
- Silver Week (Sep 19-23): Respect for the Aged Day (Mon Sep 21) and Autumnal Equinox (Wed Sep 23). Take Tue Sep 22 off = 1 PTO day, 5 days off. 5.0x.
- New Year (Jan 1-3): Most businesses close Dec 29 - Jan 3. Take Dec 29-31 if your employer doesn't = 3 PTO days, 10 days off. 3.3x.
Tip: Golden Week flights within Asia sell out months ahead. If you're planning to travel, book by February at the latest.
Singapore
Public holidays in 2026: 11 Statutory minimum leave: 7 days (first year), scaling to 14 days after 8 years of service
Singapore's leave entitlement is modest, making bridge strategy essential. The multicultural holiday calendar spreads public holidays across the year, giving consistent bridge opportunities rather than clusters.
Top bridge windows:
- Hari Raya Puasa (Tue Mar 31): Take Mon Mar 30 off = 1 PTO day, 4 days off. 4.0x.
- National Day (Sun Aug 9, observed Mon Aug 10): Take Tue-Fri = 4 PTO days, 9 days off. 2.3x.
- Christmas (Fri Dec 25): Take Dec 28-31 = 4 PTO days, 10 days off. 2.5x.
Tip: With only 7-14 statutory days, every PTO day must count. Prioritize 4.0x windows (single days that create 4-day weekends) and save longer stretches for one anchor holiday per year.

The Universal Principle
Every country's calendar is different, but the math is the same everywhere: days adjacent to weekends and public holidays are worth more than days in the middle of a random week. The fewer statutory leave days you have, the more this matters.
LeaveWise calculates the optimal bridge windows for your specific country, state, and PTO budget automatically. Enter your details and see every high-efficiency window in 2026, ranked by multiplier.
