United Kingdom

Public holidays in 2026: 8 (England and Wales) Statutory minimum leave: 28 days (including bank holidays) for full-time workers

The UK's leave entitlement is among the strongest in Europe when you combine the 20-day statutory minimum with 8 bank holidays. The challenge is that bank holidays cluster -- three in spring, none between late August and Christmas.

United States

Federal holidays in 2026: 11 Statutory minimum leave: 0 (no federal requirement; average private-sector benefit is 10-15 days)

America is the only advanced economy with no statutory paid leave. That makes every PTO day more valuable -- and bridging more important.

• Thanksgiving (Thu Nov 26): Take Mon-Wed before = 3 PTO days, 9 days off. 3.0x.

Tip: If your employer offers floating holidays, save them for mid-week public holidays where a single day converts to a 4-day weekend.

Australia

Public holidays in 2026: 8 national + 1-3 state-specific Statutory minimum leave: 20 days (4 weeks) for full-time employees under the National Employment Standards

Australia's leave system is generous by global standards, and state holidays add extra opportunities. The calendar varies significantly between states -- always check your specific state.

Germany

Public holidays in 2026: 9-13 (varies by state; Bavaria has the most) Statutory minimum leave: 20 days (based on 5-day work week); many collective agreements provide 25-30

Germany is a bridging powerhouse. The concept is so embedded in the culture that there's a dedicated word for it: Bruckentag (bridge day). Employers expect bridge requests, and many firms publish annual bridge-day calendars in January.

Tip: File your Bruckentag requests in January. Popular bridge days -- especially the Friday after Ascension -- sell out in German offices within the first week of the year.

France

Public holidays in 2026: 11 Statutory minimum leave: 25 days (5 weeks) + RTT days in many sectors

France's combination of 25 statutory leave days, 11 public holidays, and widespread RTT (reduction of working time) agreements means many French workers get 36-40 paid days off annually. The bridge strategy here is about maximizing consecutive time off for longer trips, not scraping together enough days for a break.

Canada

Federal holidays in 2026: 6 statutory (nationally) + provincial holidays Statutory minimum leave: 10 days (2 weeks) federally; most provinces mandate 10-15 days

Canada's holiday calendar is similar to the US but with key differences: Thanksgiving falls in October, and provincial holidays like Family Day (February) and Civic Holiday (August) create extra bridge options depending on your province.

Japan

Public holidays in 2026: 16 Statutory minimum leave: 10-20 days (scales with tenure; 10 days after 6 months, maxing at 20 after 6.5 years)

Japan has the most public holidays of any country on this list -- but also one of the lowest PTO utilization rates. Cultural pressure against taking leave remains strong, though the government's yukyu shoka (paid leave uptake) campaign is pushing usage above 60% for the first time.

Singapore

Public holidays in 2026: 11 Statutory minimum leave: 7 days (first year), scaling to 14 days after 8 years of service

Singapore's leave entitlement is modest, making bridge strategy essential. The multicultural holiday calendar spreads public holidays across the year, giving consistent bridge opportunities rather than clusters.
