Columbus Day 2026: A 4-Day Fall Foliage Trip for 1 PTO Day

Share:

The Forgotten Long Weekend

Columbus Day (or Indigenous Peoples' Day, depending on your state) is one of the most underused long weekends of the year. It falls on Monday, October 12, 2026 -- right in the heart of fall foliage season.

Many workers forget about it entirely. Some employers don't observe it. But if yours does, you have a free 3-day weekend sitting in the most beautiful month of the year.

Columbus Day 2026 PTO calendar showing how 1 PTO day on Friday October 9 creates a 4-day weekend through Monday October 12

The 1-Day Play: 4 Days Off

Take Friday, October 9 off:

Date Day Status
Fri Oct 9 Friday PTO day 1 (also Hangeul Day in Korea -- fun fact)
Sat Oct 10 Saturday Weekend
Sun Oct 11 Sunday Weekend
Mon Oct 12 Monday Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day

1 PTO day → 4 days off. Efficiency: 4.0x.

That's one of the highest single-day PTO returns of the year.

The Full Week: 9 Days Off

Take Tuesday through Friday off the week after Columbus Day:

Date Day Status
Fri Oct 9 Friday PTO day 1
Sat–Mon Oct 10–12 Weekend + Holiday
Tue Oct 13 Tuesday PTO day 2
Wed Oct 14 Wednesday PTO day 3
Thu Oct 15 Thursday PTO day 4
Fri Oct 16 Friday PTO day 5
Sat Oct 17 Saturday Weekend
Sun Oct 18 Sunday Weekend

5 PTO days → 10 days off. Enough for a serious fall road trip or international getaway.

Peak Foliage Timing

Horizontal timeline showing peak foliage by region: New England peaks early October, Mid-Atlantic mid October, Southeast late October

Mid-October is the sweet spot for fall color across a huge swath of the US:

Region Peak Foliage Week (2026 estimate)
Northern Vermont / New Hampshire Oct 1–10
Southern Vermont / Berkshires Oct 8–18
Hudson Valley, NY Oct 10–20
Shenandoah Valley, VA Oct 15–25
Great Smoky Mountains, TN/NC Oct 15–30
Michigan / Wisconsin Oct 5–15
Colorado Rockies Sep 25–Oct 10

A Columbus Day weekend trip hits the peak almost exactly for the Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England -- the most accessible foliage regions from major East Coast cities.

The Best Fall Trips for a 4-Day Weekend

Destination cards for Columbus Day fall trips: Vermont Route 100, Shenandoah, White Mountains NH, and Asheville NC

Road trips (drivable from major cities):

  • NYC → Vermont (Route 100) -- The most iconic fall drive in America. Start in Bennington, wind north through Weston, Killington, Stowe. 4 days is perfect.
  • DC → Shenandoah Skyline Drive -- 105 miles of ridge-top driving with pull-offs at every overlook. Pair with a night in Charlottesville.
  • Boston → White Mountains, NH -- Kancamagus Highway is the classic. October is the reason this road exists.
  • Chicago → Door County, WI -- Peninsula jutting into Lake Michigan. Orchards, lighthouses, fish boils, and blazing maples.

Fly-to destinations:

  • Asheville, NC -- Blue Ridge Parkway is peak foliage in mid-October. The food and brewery scene makes Asheville worth the trip even without leaves.
  • Portland, Maine -- Lobster, lighthouses, and gold-red forests. Flights from NYC are often under $150 round trip.
  • Bend, Oregon -- A different kind of fall: golden aspens against volcanic peaks. Craft beer capital of the Pacific Northwest.

If Your Employer Doesn't Observe Columbus Day

About 30% of private employers don't give Columbus Day off. If that's you:

  • Take Monday as PTO instead → Still a 4-day weekend for 2 PTO days (Fri + Mon)
  • Or pivot to Veterans Day → November 11 is a Wednesday in 2026. Take Thu–Fri off for a 5-day break (2 PTO). Foliage has moved south by then -- Smokies, Ozarks, and Texas Hill Country are peaking.

October Is Cheap

October is shoulder season for most international destinations too:

  • Europe -- Summer prices are gone. Rome, Barcelona, and Lisbon are 60–75°F with 40% fewer tourists than summer.
  • Japan -- Fall foliage season starts in late October in Nikko and northern Honshu. Still pre-peak for Kyoto (which peaks in November).
  • New Zealand -- Spring has arrived. Shoulder season pricing, wildflowers blooming, hiking conditions ideal.
