Bruckentage 2026: Germany's Bridge Day Calendar
Fact-checked May 10, 2026How we verify
Why 2026 Is a Strong Year for Bruckentage
Germany guarantees a statutory minimum of 24 Werktage of paid vacation per year under §3 of the Bundesurlaubsgesetz (BUrlG) — which equates to 20 working days for employees on a standard 5-day work week, on top of the country's public holidays. The real question every January is not how many holidays you get, but where they fall on the calendar.
In 2026, several nationwide Feiertage land on Thursdays and Fridays, creating textbook Bruckentage -- the "bridge days" where a single PTO day connects a public holiday to a weekend. The result: multi-day breaks at a fraction of the leave cost.
But 2026 also has two holidays that fall on Saturdays, effectively wasting days you'd already have off. Knowing which holidays to build around -- and which to write off -- is the difference between 40 and 55+ days off this year.
This guide covers every nationwide Feiertag, ranks the best Bruckentage by efficiency, breaks down the legendary May supercombination, and shows you how to stretch 20 Urlaubstage across the entire year.
Germany's 2026 Feiertage: The Full Calendar
Germany has 9 nationwide public holidays (bundesweite Feiertage). Individual states add between 1 and 4 more, but these 9 apply everywhere from Flensburg to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
| Date | Feiertag | Day of Week | Bridge Potential |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 January | Neujahr | Thursday | High |
| 3 April | Karfreitag | Friday | High |
| 6 April | Ostermontag | Monday | High |
| 1 May | Tag der Arbeit | Friday | High |
| 14 May | Christi Himmelfahrt | Thursday | High |
| 25 May | Pfingstmontag | Monday | Medium |
| 3 October | Tag der Deutschen Einheit | Saturday | None |
| 25 December | 1. Weihnachtsfeiertag | Friday | High |
| 26 December | 2. Weihnachtsfeiertag | Saturday | None |
The pattern is immediately clear. Seven of the nine holidays fall on weekdays with strong bridge potential. Two fall on Saturdays, which means they're effectively lost -- Germany, unlike the UK, does not shift weekend holidays to the following Monday. Tag der Deutschen Einheit and the second Christmas day simply vanish into the weekend.
That leaves 2026 with a net advantage: the holidays that do fall on workdays are positioned almost perfectly for bridging. Thursdays and Fridays dominate the calendar, which is exactly what you want.
What Are the Best Bruckentage of 2026?
Here are the top five bridge opportunities of 2026, ranked by the ratio of total days off to Urlaubstage spent. This is the number that actually matters -- it tells you how much break you get per day of leave.
1. Christi Himmelfahrt -- The Classic Bruckentag
Christi Himmelfahrt (Ascension Day) falls on Thursday, 14 May 2026. Take Friday 15 May off. That bridges the holiday to the weekend.
Result: 1 Urlaubstag for 4 days off (Thu-Sun). That's a 4.0x return.
The Himmelfahrt bridge is the single most efficient PTO day you can spend in 2026. One day of leave, four days off. If you do nothing else this year, file this one first -- it's the most popular Bruckentag in Germany and slots fill fast with employers who limit concurrent absences.
This is also "Vatertag" (Father's Day) in Germany, so the Thursday itself is already a cultural long-weekend tradition. Adding the Friday just makes it official.
2. Neujahr -- Start the Year Right
New Year's Day falls on Thursday, 1 January. Take Friday 2 January off. The weekend follows.
Result: 1 Urlaubstag for 4 days off (Thu-Sun). That's a 4.0x return.
The efficiency matches Himmelfahrt. The only reason it ranks second is practical: most people's 2026 leave budgets haven't been approved yet on 1 January, and many offices are already running on skeleton staff over the holidays anyway. Still, if you have carry-over days or your employer pre-approves January leave, this is a free 4-day weekend.
3. Easter -- The 10-Day Window
Karfreitag (Good Friday, 3 April) and Ostermontag (Easter Monday, 6 April) already give you a 4-day weekend at no cost. But the real value is in extending it.
Take Tuesday 7 April through Thursday 9 April off. That's 3 Urlaubstage. Combined with the two public holidays and two weekends, you get 10 consecutive days off (Saturday 28 March through Sunday 12 April -- though the working week of 30 March to 2 April would need 4 more days to capture the full stretch).
The more practical version: take only 7-9 April (Tue-Thu) after Easter, and you get a continuous block from Friday 3 April through Sunday 12 April.
Result: 3 Urlaubstage for 10 days off. That's a 3.3x return.
Easter 2026 is one of the year's best extended-break opportunities. Flights and hotel prices do spike around Osterfeiertage, but booking 8-10 weeks ahead typically avoids the worst of it.
4. Christmas -- Close Out the Year
- Weihnachtsfeiertag falls on Friday, 25 December. Take Monday 28, Tuesday 29, Wednesday 30, and Thursday 31 December off. New Year's Day 2027 is a Thursday, and if you also take Friday 2 January, you can bridge all the way to the first weekend of the new year.
The conservative version: take 28-31 December off. That's 4 Urlaubstage. Combined with Christmas Friday, the preceding weekend, and the following New Year's weekend, you get a substantial break.
Result: 4 Urlaubstage for 10 days off (Sat 20 Dec weekend through Sun 4 Jan). That's a 2.5x return.
The efficiency is lower than Easter because you need 4 leave days instead of 3. But the sheer length of the break -- and the fact that most German offices slow to a crawl between Christmas and New Year (Betriebsruhe) -- makes this one of the most popular windows of the year.
5. Tag der Arbeit -- The May Kickoff
Labour Day falls on Friday, 1 May. The preceding weekend is already yours. No bridging needed for a basic 3-day weekend, but if you take Monday 27 through Thursday 30 April off, you get a 9-day break spanning two weekends.
Result: 4 Urlaubstage for 9 days off. That's a 2.3x return.
On its own, this is a solid but unremarkable window. Where it gets interesting is when you combine it with the other May holidays. More on that below.
Which Holidays Have the Worst Placement?
Not every Feiertag earns its keep in 2026. Two are effectively wasted.
Tag der Deutschen Einheit (3 October, Saturday): Germany's national day falls on a Saturday. Unlike some countries, there is no mechanism to shift it to a Monday. You were already off. This is a lost public holiday, and there is nothing to be done about it. The next time 3 October falls on a weekday is 2028 (Tuesday) -- 2027 lands on a Sunday and is also wasted.
2. Weihnachtsfeiertag (26 December, Saturday): The second day of Christmas also falls on a Saturday. Again, no substitute day is provided. The first Christmas day (Friday) is still valuable for bridging, but the second one contributes nothing.
In total, 2026 wastes 2 of 9 nationwide holidays to weekend placement. That's average -- some years lose three or more. The 7 usable holidays are well-positioned enough to more than compensate.
The May Supercombination: How Does It Work?
May 2026 is extraordinary. Three public holidays fall within a single month: Tag der Arbeit (Fri 1 May), Christi Himmelfahrt (Thu 14 May), and Pfingstmontag (Mon 25 May). In some southern states, Fronleichnam (Thu 4 June) extends the run into early June.
With strategic bridging, you can turn 8 Urlaubstage into 16 days off across May. Here's the day-by-day breakdown.
Block 1: Labour Day weekend (1-4 May)
- Fri 1 May: Tag der Arbeit (public holiday)
- Sat 2 May - Sun 3 May: Weekend
- No PTO needed. 3 days off for free.
Block 2: Himmelfahrt bridge (14-17 May)
- Thu 14 May: Christi Himmelfahrt (public holiday)
- Fri 15 May: Bruckentag (1 Urlaubstag)
- Sat 16 May - Sun 17 May: Weekend
- 1 PTO day. 4 days off.
Block 3: The mega-bridge (14-25 May) For those willing to invest more leave, you can connect Himmelfahrt to Pfingstmontag. Take 15-16 May is covered above; now also take 18-22 May (Mon-Fri) off. That's 6 Urlaubstage total (including the Friday after Himmelfahrt).
- Thu 14 May: Christi Himmelfahrt (public holiday)
- Fri 15 May: Bruckentag (Urlaubstag 1)
- Sat 16 - Sun 17 May: Weekend
- Mon 18 - Fri 22 May: Urlaubstage 2-6
- Sat 23 - Sun 24 May: Weekend
- Mon 25 May: Pfingstmontag (public holiday)
Result: 6 Urlaubstage for 12 consecutive days off (14-25 May). That's a 2.0x return.
Block 4: Extend after Pfingsten (25-29 May) If you add Tuesday 26 through Friday 29 May, that's 4 more Urlaubstage, extending your break through the following weekend.
The full May supercombination (14 May - 31 May):
| Date | Day | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Thu 14 May | Christi Himmelfahrt | Public holiday |
| Fri 15 May | Bruckentag | Urlaubstag |
| Sat 16 - Sun 17 May | Weekend | Free |
| Mon 18 May | Bridge week | Urlaubstag |
| Tue 19 May | Bridge week | Urlaubstag |
| Wed 20 May | Bridge week | Urlaubstag |
| Thu 21 May | Bridge week | Urlaubstag |
| Fri 22 May | Bridge week | Urlaubstag |
| Sat 23 - Sun 24 May | Weekend | Free |
| Mon 25 May | Pfingstmontag | Public holiday |
| Tue 26 May | Extension | Urlaubstag |
| Wed 27 May | Extension | Urlaubstag |
| Sat 30 - Sun 31 May | Weekend | Free |
With 8 Urlaubstage (15, 18-22, 26-27 May), you get 16 days off from Thursday 14 May through Sunday 31 May -- only returning to work on Monday 1 June. That's a 2.0x return over a continuous stretch, which is remarkable for a block this long.
If you only have a few days to spend in May, prioritize the Himmelfahrt Bruckentag (Fri 15 May) first. It's the highest-efficiency single day of the year. Then consider the week of 18-22 May to connect to Pfingsten. The post-Pfingsten extension (26-27 May) is the lowest priority since it doesn't benefit from another public holiday.
Which State-Specific Holidays Create Bonus Bridges?
Beyond the 9 nationwide Feiertage, several German states get additional public holidays that create their own Bruckentage. The most significant in 2026:
Fronleichnam (Thursday, 4 June)
Fronleichnam falls on a Thursday in 2026, making it another textbook Bruckentag. Take Friday 5 June off and you get a 4-day weekend. That's a 4.0x return -- identical to Himmelfahrt three weeks earlier.
For workers in these states, May and June together offer four Thursday/Friday holidays in six weeks. That's an extraordinary density of bridge opportunities.
Reformationstag (Saturday, 31 October)
Observed in: Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, and Thuringen.
Falls on a Saturday. Wasted, just like Tag der Deutschen Einheit. No bridge possible.
Allerheiligen (Sunday, 1 November)
Observed in: Bayern, Baden-Wurttemberg, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, and Saarland.
Falls on a Sunday in 2026. Also wasted. The autumn of 2026 is poor for state-specific bridges across the board.
Mariä Himmelfahrt (Saturday, 15 August)
Observed in: Saarland and predominantly Catholic communities in Bayern.
Saturday again. 2026 is unkind to autumn and summer state holidays. The value is concentrated almost entirely in May and June.
How Many Days Off Can You Get With 20 Urlaubstage?
The statutory minimum in Germany is 20 Urlaubstage for a 5-day work week. Here's what happens when you place them strategically versus randomly.
| Strategy | Urlaubstage Used | Total Days Off | Avg. Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Random mid-week days | 20 | 20 | 1.0x |
| Adjacent to weekends only | 20 | 36 | 1.8x |
| Strategic Bruckentage (nationwide) | 20 | 51 | 2.6x |
| Strategic + state holidays (e.g. Bayern) | 20 | 56 | 2.8x |
The difference between random placement and strategic placement is 31 extra days off per year -- more than six additional weeks -- using the exact same number of Urlaubstage.
Here's one way to allocate 20 days for maximum impact:
| Window | Urlaubstage | Days Off | Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neujahr bridge (Fri 2 Jan) | 1 | 4 | 4.0x |
| Easter extension (Tue 7 - Thu 9 Apr) | 3 | 10 | 3.3x |
| Himmelfahrt-Pfingsten combo (15, 18-22 May) | 6 | 12 | 2.0x |
| Christmas-New Year (28-31 Dec) | 4 | 10 | 2.5x |
| Summer block (e.g. Mon 20 - Fri 31 Jul) | 6 | 16 | 2.7x |
| Total | 20 | 52 | 2.6x |
That's 52 days off from 20 Urlaubstage. More than 10 weeks. The summer block is the least efficient per-day, but most people want (and need) a longer continuous break at some point during the year. Placing it outside of public holiday windows keeps it from cannibalizing your high-efficiency Bruckentage.
Many German employers implement Betriebsurlaub (company-mandated shutdown days), particularly between Christmas and New Year or during summer. These days are deducted from your Urlaubstage allocation. Check your company's policy before planning -- you may have fewer freely placeable days than you think.

Plan Your Bruckentage
The calendar does not care whether you plan ahead or wing it. But your employer's leave approval process does. The most popular Bruckentage -- especially the Friday after Himmelfahrt -- are oversubscribed at most German companies. Early planners get approved; late planners get declined.
